M.G.Watson teaching
From
September to December, 2009, I am teaching as Meiji Gakuin's exchange
professor to Hope College (Michigan, U.S.A.) and will not be available
during office hours this autumn. I return to Japan in late December.
If you are interested in applying for my 09ks seminar class, you should first read the information about this class (ゼミ要覧). Contact me by email if you have any questions. Many students have contacted me already with questions, so let me make a few things clear:
(1) You must submit TWO essays, one in Japanese, and one in English. See ゼミ要覧 for the topics.
(2) Include both essays in a single file and send it to me by email attachment (添付ファイル) by October 29th (Thursday). Make sure that you include your name and student number in the file itself and in your message to me.(3) Some of you have also asked whether the class will be conducted in English. It will be conducted bilingually.
This means that I will speak English as much as possible--but I will
speak Japanese whenever necessary. Good communication is my priority.
You will give some presentations in Japanese and some in English. You
will need to read and do research in English, but we also read
materials in Japanese. Some writing will be done in English, some in
Japanese. (You can write the graduation thesis in English or Japanese,
as you choose.)
(4) For other steps in applying to this seminar, please follow the general instructions for all seminars.
If you are worried about whether your English is good enough, let me assure you that I am more interested in your willingness to try hard
to improve your English than in your present ability. But if you are
unsure, do let me know your TOEFL score, or speak to me directly via
Skype. Contact me by email to arrange an interview. (This is entirely OPTIONAL.)
Some students have asked about the field trip. You
will find it useful to look through the report made by the 07ks
students about the field trip we made to Germany and England in
2009. There is a copy with color photographs available on the first floor of the 8th building.
Or you can simply look at the report in PDF
format (8 MB). For the sake of students' privacy, the PDF requires
a very simple password to open it. Just answer this question:
"What is the two-letter abbreviation for the Faculty of International
Studies"?
